I have a to20 with the contenential engine. I have broken 2 starter noses. the first i am pretty sure was my fault, tried to start the tractor while the flywheel was still spining. the second just happened 7 months later. the tractor stalled and was hard starting, bad coil or condensor, and while turning over the startbogged out. Pulled it to find another cracked nose! got it welded and ready to reinstall. WHy or how are these things busting?! My welder buddy suggested taking an 1/8 of material off of the nose incase it is the starter kicking or a bent tooth or two on the flywheel. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated as it is snowing and I need her for plowing the drive.

Delco Remy starters used on the continental engine should have a thrust washer at the end of the gear to keep it from engaging the flywheel too far. See if it is in place.

I have checked the timing, It is on top dead center. I also checked for the thrust washer, I believe it is there, a brass piece in the nose cone and or a ridged washer before that on the shaft of the starter between the nose cone and the starter gear. An as I said before I broke it again. GOing to try to get it woeded again and start fresh. Still looking for a cure. anyone got a hand crank for sale?!

We had a Massey 65 gas,Continental G176, that would do the same thing.

I would check the timing first.

My timming is set at tdc Top Dead Center with no advance or retard in the mix currently. I am going to recheck when I reinstall the starter. If not that any other suggestions?

Are the mechanical advance flyweights in the dist. retracting fully when you shut the engine off?
This has come up before on this board. Search the archives. Only other thing that might help is not turn the key on till engine is turning over.

I think you're just having bad luck with 50 year old parts.

jim jones, had that problem with a TO-30. First time had the nose cone welded and re installed starter. Sometime later it broke again. Scouted around and found another nose cone. Then read somewhere to make sure it is timed right. We timed it by the book. I&T manuel. Also cut some shims from a pop can and spaced the starter out. It worked fine up untill I sold out.
Good luck, hope you get it fixed.
