Anyone using Duratran hydraulic/transmission oil

Hi,

I recently changed the hydraulic/transmission oil in my Fergie to Duratran as I want to be able to use the tractor in the winter. The problem is that the 20 litre pail that I purchased from Petro Canada has left me about 2 litres short. I have been in contact with Petro Canada and they say it is only available in 20 litre pails or drums.

So I am sending this inquiry out to see if any Fergie owners in the Ottawa/Gatineau area are using Duratran and my have a couple of litres that I could purchase to add to my tractor.

Thanks,
Richard

Richard, Is this duratran classified GL-1? Anything else contains additives that react with the brass and bronze bushings in the pump, trans, and diff. Many use 50wt mineral oil in winter (<32*F) to avoid the winter sluggishness of 80/90wt.

Oil Can Harry; Don't mistake me for a petroleum engineer but let me ask this question.
Can a person use 20 litres of Duratran and then get by with 4 litres of a more commonly available
transmission lube product? Does anyone on the panel know if this is absolutely taboo and what
damage or lack of performance would be in evidence.

i use it in my 54 tea 2085 been using it since 1987 ,tried other stuff once or twice and came right back to the durtran, it takes one 20 litre pail and usually one4 litre jug, both are sold at all petro-can bulk plants, when your adding the 4 litre jug go slow and keep checking so you don,t over fill ,if theres sludge built up or anything , im pretty sure mine took 24 litres when i changed it last month.its good oil if you can keep the moisture out it lasts a long time and you can run it summer and winter.

Hi toolman,

Thanks for the response regarding the Duratran. Can you let me know the name of the petro-can bulk plant that sold you Duratran in a 4 litre jug, as that is definitely not what I have been told by the dealer in Ottawa? It is actually the Duratran XL that I purchased.

I am glad that you were happy with the Duratran.

Thanks,
Richard

hi richard ,im not sure you have the same stuff that i have , i just went over to the barn and checked i don,t see an XL anywhere on the containers, heres what it says on the container,DURATRAN :tranmission/hydraulic fluid.a heavy duty tranmission /hydraulic fluid for use in tractors and industrial equipement having a common oil system for the tranmission, differential, power takeoff, hydraulics, wet brakes, and power sterring. .jdm j20 c,fnha-2-c-201,.caterpillar to-2,.allison c-4.it also has a logo with a maple leaf with HT on it but like i said i didn,t see anything with an XL, i checked this out on petrocans website and it said it was ok for my tractor actually i think it even said it replaced the mineral oil and some other oil number that the guys here had been talking about, however i had already been using it for years as it was, never had any problems, only have to change it because of moisture, i use the tractor alot winter and summer, i did use 20 liters plus a 4 liter jug for a total of 24 liters,i have always bought it this way a 20 litre and a 4 litre pail so maybe that XL stuff isn,t the same and doesn,t come in 4 liter jugs.for the 20 liter pail i paid $63 and change with the taxes don,t recall how much the 4 liter jug was, hope this helps.later

richard , i just checked out petrocan s website , i see the oil you got , it,s pretty much the same as what i have, i don,t understand why you can get it in 4 liter pails ,i would think maybe it,s a dealer thing and maybe he just doesn,t want to be bothered with the 4 liter jugs, is there another dealer in your area, if not i guess you will have to get another 20 liter pail and and just use what you need and store the rest away, thats good oil that you have im sure you won,t have any problems with.later

I have checked with the dealer and Petro Canada and it seems the only alternative at the moment is to purchase a 4 litre jug of Duratran and use it to top up the Duratran XL that I put in the tractor. The Duratran XL is a synthetic blend which is meant for summer/winter use so the consensus is that adding some normal Duratran will not degrade the porperties of the XL significantly.

So far it seems to work very well in the cold weather. One thing about this oil is that it is almost clear in colour so is very hard to see on the dipstick, at least for the moment.

If anyone else wants to check out the specs on this oil you can download the pdf file on the Petro-Canada site
