My TO-20 recently just quickly overheated in less than 10 minutes. Over the last winter I replaced the head gasket and thermostat, and gave it a new paint job. Long story short I was running it the other day and it quickly overheated, it shot from below normal to overheating in less than a minute. Is this a warped head? I also heard a low growling sound from the tractor, like metal quickly expanding? Please help, I love my fergie so much!!!! Thanks in advance.

Not to be a smart --- but when you overhauled the engine you did,ent happen to put the thermostat in backwords did you.

I believe you said that you just replaced the head gasket. Are you sure you put it on "right side up" ? I do know that with the standard engine, you will partially clog a coolant passage if the gasket is installed up.side. down.

Hey Mr. Bartfish, I don't think anybody mentioned that delayed ignition timing can cause overheating, since the fuel-air mix is still burning on the way out the exhaust valve; that might be a last-resort thing to check. There was a post here a month ago about the exhaust manifold glowing cherry-red from this cause. Also, having no thermostat at all might cause coolant to pass through the radiator too quickly to dissipate its heat load -- happened to me with a '78 Ford car.
Good luck! Tex

Top and bottom radiator hose should be about the same temperature...if not...thermostat for sure.Be sure to "burp" the cooling system. I'ts not common with a cooling system this simple, but the're could be an air pocket somewhere. Let it get warm/ hot, shut it off, wait a few minuets and repeat. Good luck, have fun...

The noise you mentioned, just wondering if it was pressurising the system due to head gasket blown or a cracked head or cylinder block. Did you try taking the radiator cap off when this happened? If you do this be careful you dont scald yourself, release the pressure slowly and use a large cloth to open the cap.

No, I never took the radiator cap off, I was afraid of getting burned. Everything appears ok, except the thermostat, which I haven't had time to check. One other thing I noticed when it happened is that the engine block was extremely hot. Thanks for all the replies.

Well try removing the thermostat, see if that stops the overheating. Maybe something as simple as that, let's hope so. We used to have quite a bit of trouble with that thermostat in the top hose, dont know why we should though, Has the tractor had a bump on the front and its pushed the radiator back slightly and damaged the top hose with the thermostat inside?

Obviously make sure that you have sufficient collant in the radiator. Make sure the radiator is clear of debris. Make sure the fan belt has the proper tension, and that the thermostat is working.

I'd run it cold with radiator cap off and look for bubbles to check if head gasket is leaking or for cracks clyinder to water jacket. If no bubbles then I'd do easy stuff first like checking thermostat. Is water pump ok? I have had ones on cars with impellor worn away. Interested to know cause. We all learn from these problems.
