12V ground problem on TE-20

I converted my TE20 to 12-volt negative ground a year ago but still have starting problems. I ran the ground cable from the battery to the top starter mounting bolt 'cause it was conveniently close to the battery. It sits out in the weather, and this connection corrodes a bit, interrupting the circuit. If I polish up the cable terminal, washer and starter web around the bolt hole, it starts fine again. Is there a better point on the engine block or transmission to attach the ground cable? Or should I just keep the 5/8 wrench and a piece of emory paper handy before starting? Thanks for the advice!
Tex

Thanks very much for your interest and suggestions, all of which I intend to put into practice.
Jump-starting from my truck caused the neg cable to get pretty hot, so it is probably too small a gauge.
Further thought about the problem leads me to the suspicion that poor ground on my solenoid is a part of the problem. I have it attached to the rebuilt battery support bracket, and the connection between this bracket and the aluminum transmission case may not pass much current. That's why the solenoid sometimes chatters, sometimes does nothing.
Thanks again! You guys are the greatest.

Where ever you decide to mount your ground, go to your local parts house & tell them you want 2 "star washers". clean the cable end and the mounting point on the tractor. Place a washer between the bolt & cable and a washer between the bolt and tractor. Make sure you have large enough cable...have fun and good luck.

Good day Tex.

I have a 1955 TEA 20-85 Neg. Ground. My neg wire goes to a bolt on the back of the dash behind the Battery box. One of the bolts that connects the steering column and the dash. It's high and dry there. Should have no problems after this change.

Good luck

My 2 cents worth.

That position is where they fitted them at the factory, but due to the age and the corrosion that takes place on that dashboard.the ground lead is better where he has it now, though why it keeps failing is very odd, maybe the ground lead isnt big enough diameter as has already been suggested and is heating up when the starter is operated, the ground lead should be at least the same diameter as the main battery lead.

I only suggested the contact to the dash as that is how mine was and I am a restorer. Harry would like to see it original, wouldn't he?
My 2 cents worth.

Hi Al, Yes Harry sure would see it that way, he was a stickler for anything like that deviating from the original and it took a lot of persuasion to get him to change his mind once he had made it up about something or other. But the guy was a genius so what the heck. I had to say something about that ground lead though, I did see that you said you were a restorer but I knew that it isnt always practical to have it perfectly original when its a working tractor and maybe people dont have your knowledge, so they arent always able to rectify problems as easily as you, so if there is a way to try and make it fool proof for day to day operation then we have to point it out. Anyway good luck with the restoration work and keep on with it and save a lot more tractors from the scrapyard.
