well now here comes the nitty gritty secrets I am learning about my TO-30. I just had to go look at it this morning and found this milky stuff on the cement under the PTO shaft at the rear of the axle. I believe the stuff means water in the differential? I can replace the fluid (if I remember what type)? Chances are it might have been condensation(tractor was not used often). I will post a pic of it after work. At least the block doesn't have bolts thru it like you said to look for JerryM/T.

Bud,
The fact that you found the "milky oil" on the driveway implies you have a seal leak. While you have the oil drained out of the tranny, etc., you might want to change the seal and gasket on the PTO. Also if you have a 1-1/8" PTO shaft, and want a 1-3/8" shaft (present standard), it would be a good time to do that. They're are all easy jobs with no oil in the tranny. (Glad to hear you got a good block.)

The water is more than likely getting in around the gear lever, just check that it is a snug fit, if not try to find a rubber cup of some kind to slip over the lever and keep most of it out anyway. The transmission can suffer from condensation especially if the tractor is not used a lot, it only gets warm and doesn't get chance to get hot enough to dispel the condensation that can form when the warm air meets the cold metal of the transmission housings. The oil needs changing when the tractor is hot if you can, to wash out all the filth in there, leave it draining overnight too if possible. It will take 24 US quarts of 80 weight straight mineral oil...NOT multi-grade. weight

This is water in oil emulsion; water is getting in the tranny, I do not believe condensation is the source of trouble; I have a 8N with the same oil in the transmission since 1952 and the N has never got milky; the 8N has always "slept" in a garage

Exactly, original oil. I traded my 9N 1940 for the 8N in 1952(9N + $900.00), the proofmeter indicates now 4500 hrs, transhydrl. oil is still light brown-yellow like day one, even if manual calls for 600 hrs replacement frequency. Hydraulics still working fine but not exactly like new, not any repair but charging system(many times). Of course engine oil was replaced every 100 hrs along with filter. I've 1964/GMC 910-3 speed manual, with original oil in tranny and use it every day; Oil in tranny still light brown.
