A new clutch pad was put in my TO-35 (dual clutch of the older type) a couple of years ago---but in the past few months developed a transmission oil leak--for which I am putting in new seals at the moment. In the past 2 months, I've noted that the clutch grabs/chatters a bit at times--but not bad. Looks like there is some oil on the clutch cover etc. Perhaps I'll just leave it alone--but since the tractor is split, is there some way to clean oil off of a clutch pad(if there is some)--and how can I get a clutch disc aligning tool to put it back together--or do I need to have one milled?

I made an aligning tool out of a piece of Cherry. Turned it on my wood lathe, took about 15 minutes. Works great.

Have used a hotplate (like a stove burner) with success. just lay a piece of sheet metal over the burner eye, place the disk on it, cook it at about 350 degrees. Its done when it stops smoking, all the oil is gone. My 2c.

Thanks. Great ideas. I hadn't thought about it, but since I have the main and pto shafts out of the transmission, I should be able to use them to line up the clutch during reassembly.

Years ago I used to wash oil soaked clutch disks in lacquer thinner and then set it alight. Be very careful when doing this as the lacquer thinner burns for some time in the rivet holes and you may think it has gone out but it has not. Do this four or five times and it should be clean. Never tried the wifes dish washer yet. Be very careful if you try this. Keep the lacquer thinner a long ways from the burning.

Doug, I don't ordinarily like to buy foreign made tools but Harbor Freight (www.harborfreight.com) has a clutch pilot tool set for under $10.00. I got one and it works fine. But if you a scrap tranny input shaft, you don't need a pilot tool.

Doug.
I was able to reclaim a good oil soaked disc and pressure plate by soaking both the disc and the plate in brake cleaner solution over night then putting in the wifes dishwasher ( unknown to her to this day) It sure came out clean and looked just like new. Didn't hurt the dishwasher either. So good that I now have a old dishwasher in my shop for cleaning of parts. Honestly it works great and cheap.

My 2 bits worth.

Your not the only one to do that Al. they use dishwashers to clean the parts on these computers too even hard drives and floppy drives and keyboards, just let em dry out thouroughly before using them though, they say it is the only real easy way to do it,

Hi Doug,
You can play a flame from a propane torch over the clutch material and it will boil off the oil. As far as the aligning tool, if you're lucky you might be able to use something like a broom handle. Some folks make these tools out of the end of an old shaft that has been salvaged from a wreck. You can also get very close by eye; I have succeeded this way several times as well but a tool certainly works best. Don't know where you can get one off hand though; maybe someone else can chime in.

A few weeks ago same question was asked and someone said about turning one out of some hard wood, sounds like a good cheap idea.

Have been working on cars for many years and have made lots of align tools from all kinds of round stock. Takes time, saves money. Loads up the grinder wheel with wood. Have fun!!!
