I had to grind down the PTO shaft to get it out. When I was done there was grinding debris inside the gearcase. I tried to flush it out with some oil, but don't think I got it all. Will this ruin the hydraulic lift pump for the 3 point lift?
Is there a filter of some kind on the pump.
What is a good way to flush the gearcase and rear end, before refilling?
Appreciate any help

Paul, You might try flushing the case with diesel oil after placing a magnet in the botton of the case. Swash(?) around the mixture and let it settle. Remove the magnet, scrape off the particles and repeat until the magnet comes out clean. Don't forget to remove the magnet before you button it up!

Congratulations! Quite a job huh? No filter for any of the three common areas that use the 80/90 wt. straight mineral oil(6 gal). If not removed, what you'll have is a crude grinding compound running through the system to ruin it. I have used fuel oil to flush the interior of the hyd area to remove gunk and debris. I have a siphon spray gun driven by air pressure that works well for this purpose. I trust you now have the pump removed for cleaning and flushing. Only the oil entrance and exit openings should need special attention.

Thanks, but I guess I am not done. I did not remove the pump. I was hoping to flush it out without removing. I guess I will split it again, and lower the openning, and spray it out with more oil. How hard is it to remove the pump. Do I have to ruin any parts to do so? In other words, how much is it going to cost me?

Thanks for all your help.
I will split the fork, and drop it out.
I am afraid I might have contaminated the pump, after I inserted the new PTO, I hand turned the shaft, thereby sucking in debris laden oil.
When I get the pump on to the bench, I will know just how bad it is.

Grit and hydraulics DO NOT MIX you need to thouroughly clean out the transmission housing and ideally you need to drop the pump out to do this properley. you need to spead the legs of the long control fork, at the bottom is the control valve, detach this before you try to do anything. The only part that you really need for sure is the pump base gasket. If you need written details of how to do this let me have an email address I can send it to

The linkage and the wishbone inside must be disconnected from the pump FIRST! Get a shop manual. You may then loosen the pump mounting bolts on the bottom of the hyd area(large square plate). If you have strong arms you can lower the pump by hand, but a floor jack is much easier. While you have the pump out replace the relief valve(~$30 I think) with a Harry Ferguson part. A Ford valve will work but has a lower pressure setting(1,700lbs vs 2,000lbs) and limits the full potential of the Ferguson system. The valve is the heart of the hyd system and if worn leaks enough to allow leakdown, reduce lifting pressure, or stick and cause the reverse of these problems. If you don't disconnect the upper linkage first you'll destroy the wishbone(rare)and your tractor is down until you locate another.
