I have had tenuous starts, to say the least, on my TE-20 since I got it. The motor would crank one turn a second some times two. Slow..... ...slow ..... ....slow..... ..
and the starter botton would get HOT. (My starter switch was moved to a button the dash some time in the past)

My Neg. cable conector got so I could not turn the bolt so I decided to get a new cable. I got a 1 guage cable with a heavy conector. WOW, Oh baby what a difference. The motor now turns a fast as my car starter.

As has ben sain in the past Bright ant tight makes a world of difference.

Should I'll also replace the 4 guage line from the starter to the starting motor. with a 1 or 2 guage wire?

Soldered connections on 1 gauge is best for both battery cables. You can probably get them anyplace that works on large truck diesels.

so where does one get 1 gauge wire? Are you then putting ends on them or are you buying them as ready-made cables?

I got it ready made with a heavy post clamp at the local Tractor Supply Co. Store

Yes! Any system is only as good as the weakest link. Harry Ferguson 6VDC electrical systems were originally "O" gauge copper stranded wire. Most guys just run down to the auto store and buy OTC prepackaged battery cables. These are 6 gauge designed for a 12VDC system, and will NOT carry the current required of 6VDC starting motors. An often overlooked source of resistance is the bolt-together castings and other metal parts the ground cable must use to complete the circuit; unless these are clean and tight also all else is futile.
