51 TO-20 manifold broke off at muffler

I put an upright muffler on my 51 TO-20 last year. When I installed it, I noticed that the flared part where it attaches to the muffler was in bad shape. Well, today I bumped a pine limb and it broke off. Is there anything that can be done short of replacing the entire manifold to get the muffler back on? Also I noticed that the metal on the dash right side (where oil pressure guage is) gets very hot. Is this because of the oil bath filter? Has anyone else noticed this on their tractor?

No the right side of the dash will never get hot because of the oil bath air filter. This is the air inlet and the coldest part of the engine. The oil used here is held in the cup at the bottom of the filter and is completely seperated from the engine oil. (good thing too as this oil pulls the dirt out of the air so it does not go into the engine.)

The heat concern you bring up is probally due to an air leak in the manifold to muffler joint. There have been many "rubberband and chewing gum" fixes for this problem posted in the past. One popular fix is to wrap the join with a then sheet metal (i.e. a soda can) prior to putting on the clamp.

The manifold on my TE20 had a similar problem suck as you describe. (crack in the same area but did not seperate) The previous owner had the manifold welded up. It works but is ugly.

For you system you could do this however I would be concerned that the weld would not hold as your verticle stack puts ALL the stress and load into the manifold at the weld. (Read as crack here)

Your best bet is to get a new manifold and anchor your muffler to provide a load path to keep the stresses out of the mainifold.

Thanks for the advice. After closely examining the manifold, it will be nearly impossible to attach muffler. I guess I will need to get some ear plugs!
