I HAVE A 1950 TO-20, GOOD BAT, NEW VOLTAGE REG, HAVE RE DONE ALL CONNECTIONS. JUST THIS LAST FEW DAYS I HAVE TO JUMP START IT THEN IT RUNS FINE. STILL HAVE THE OLD 6 VOLT SYSTEM WITH A 8 VOLT BAT. IF I CHECK VOLTAGE FROM THE GENERATOR TO GROUND ON THE BAT I GET NOTHING, IF I CHECK POS TO NEG ON THE BAT I GET 8.6. I THINK MY GEN. IS GONE, AM I RIGHT? DOES ANYONE KNOW A REBUILDER IN THE ST. LOUIS MO. AREA, MY SUPPILIER WANTS $120.00 TO DO THE JOB, I THINK THAT IS CRAZY.

Steve
Just follow what Al has written take it apart and clean it good, the armature where the brushes ride relieve the groves and then take a fine piece of emery cloth and polish it (this is the brass part) grease your bearings put it back together. This is about what they get 120.00 for I just did my to-20.

Last year I had new bearings and brushes put in my generator and adjusted by a local local shop for $40. Works great. I would make sure you really need $120 worth of rebuild to get it working! Remember to polarize it when you reinstall.

Good day Sterve.

I have a TEA 20-85 12 Volt and had the same problem. I took the generator apart and found that the brushes were hanging up. Fixed that by just a good cleaning. Next I took the armature and cleaned that. Next take a hacksaw blade break it, grind a hook on the end so that you can releave the insulator between the rotor segments. Take each one down about 1/64. Clean again and lube bearings , put together and voila , you should have juice. Worked for me.

My 2 cents worth.

Al.
