I need to replace the ring gear on the flywheel of my TO-30.How do you get the old gear off and put the new one on so that it doesn't move. Also noticed two holes in the flywheel that are full of cork. What's the deal with this?

To get the old one off you grind between the teeth, or drill or hacksaw, towards the flywheel to weaken the ring a bit then hit it with a cold (steel) chisel and it will split quite easily. The new one has to be heated, usually with oxy/fuel gas torch, and should then drop onto flywheel and will shrink to fit. Putting flywheel in freezer first to cool it may also help a bit. In low tech areas of the world I suspected they'd use a fire, and no freezer, and get the job done just the same. Don't know about the cork.
