This is driving me nutz! My TO-20 starts right up, runs fine....after anywhere from a half-hour to an hour of use (seems to depend on how hot it is outside) it just quits- as if you turned the key off. It'll usually restart and run a few more minutes....and then the next time it quits, it wont restart untill you let it sit a while. Last year the tractor never gave me a days trouble- had put all new tune-up parts (including coil)and new carb last summer.... Is there any kind of ballast resistor or something on these tractors? Any ideas???

Did everything as James. Found out it was a melted plastic "in line" fuel filter that was restricting fuel flow.

Phil and Pilgrim:

I'm one step ahead of ya'!

I replaced the condenser yesterday- and today, I got a peice of rubber fuel line with which to insulate to fuel line....as it is precariously close to Mr. exhaust manifold. We'll see how she goes the next time I work her! If that don't work....next step will be jumping around the ignitione' switch...and then replace the coil (It's a 12V coil with the built in resistor)

James UK- What you say rings true- I had ruled out head trouble, as, like you say, I wasn't losing any coolant- but now I know that that could be a possibility!

Thanks, all.

Keep the advice coming!

My first thought was coil. Even with a new one that could be it - or condenser. As mentioned below that's the classic symptom. Are you running a 6v coil with a 12v battery ??? Maybe that's breaking down the coil after a while.

You might want to check to make sure the fuel line to the carb is not too close to the exhaust manifold. Boiling gas in the line will do something similar.

The "classic" cause of the problem you describe is a bad coil. It also could be a bad condensor or a bad ignition switch, and as James points out it could be a number of things. But the most prevalent cause of your problem, statistically speaking, is the coil. I'd get a new one, try it, and if it works, throw the old one away. If it doesn't work, well, you have a spare coil. You might get a condensor too at the same time, just to hedge your bet, as they are cheap, but I'd install one item at a time hopefully to know what the real problem is/was. You can jump around the ignition switch to test that situation first if you like.

I don't know if this will help, but mine used to behave like yours. I also went through the usual stuff - plugs, points, leads, coil and condenser, plus fuel line, filter, flow, carburation, etc.

It too was fine when cold. The problem was eventually traced to a single cylinder head stud - some kind person had 'encouraged' a metric nut onto an AF thread - the nut and stud threads had both stripped, and the head was therefore not properly torqued down on this one stud.

That was sufficient to cause exactly what you have described. Cold it would start really easily, but was a pig when hot. Leaving it to cool down got you a bit further, then it would start to play up again. 12 miles of travel could take a long, long time.

There was no sign of boiling, or lost water that I could tell. It would just quit.
