5 or 6 foot finish mower for a TO-30?

I have a 1952 TO-30 that I've been mowing my 3.2 acres with. I've been using a heavy-duty 5-foot rotary cutter, but at the end of last summer it broke a support and cracked the deck. Now, I plan on getting it welded up, but this looks like a good excuse to get a finish mower. I'm tired of gouging the ground when it gets a little uneven.

My local farm store has King Kutter finish mowers for $999 for the 6-foot and $899 for the 5-foot. Any ideas on whether the extra foot is worth $100, and would my TO-30 (engine was rebuilt two years ago) would have any trouble with a 6 footer? The ground is fairly flat and even, just a few ripples here and there.

Thanks!

I agree with Kirby, I also use a 6' King Kutter
and have no problem mowing in 2nd gear. I did have a spindle bolt strip out while using it on the first time out and King Kutter sent me a new one when I sent them the old one, free of charge
and they paid the shipping, pretty good service!

I use a 5 foot Allis-Chalmers finishing mower with my 54' TO-30. It does an excellent job. I like to use 2nd gear on the normal cutting, but if it gets a little tough then I switch to 1st. It does a great job and doesn't scalp that much. It has four wheels, but sometimes scalping is unavoidable. I would go ahead and pay the extra and get the 6-footer. As long as you do not let the grass get to thick, then you should have no problem. If your 30 can handle thick grass with the bush hog then you are ready to go.

I use an old Hayter 6 foot finishing mower behind my TED 20-85, three 2 foot rotary blades, and it does a great job. 2nd is about as high as you can go - any more and you can really see where the blades have cut.

A wheel at each corner is a must if you want to reduce scalping.

I HAVE A 6FT. WOODS THAT I USE BEHIND MY TO20, IT WORKS VERY WELL. THE ONLY THING I MIGHT RECOMMEND WOULD BE THE EXTRA WHEELS. MINE JUST HAS TWO ON THE BACK BUT TWO MORE ON THE FRONT WOULD GIVE A BETTER CUT.

I bought a king kutter here in kansas last may from an Orschlien dealer for 895.00 (6ft) and this mower is everything you could want, my nine acres looks like a golf course and with 4 wheels minimal scalping. Good luck and happy mowing..... ..Kirby
