Howdy -
I am an 8N Ford owner but have a chance to buy a Ferguson TO-20. I always see parts such as the winged headlight brackets listed as: "will fit Ferguson, too". Are they similar tractors and will the same parts fit both? What are the pros and cons of each? I've heard the 8N has always had valve problems, rear wheel leaks, steering problems, electrical problems, etc, etc. This was from a Ferguson owner. All partiality aside, what are the basic facts on each? Thanks.

Thanks for all your opinions guys. They are all very helpful. One more question, what is the diff between the Continental engine and the Perkins engine?

be sure to check out the engine block!!! the continental engines are notorious for cracking between the cylinders.

Others have good comments. Probably the biggest single advantage of the 8N over the Fergies is the 8N has position control, which can be added on to the Fergies for about $70-80. Another advantage to the 8N is having both brakes together. The Fergie requires you to use the left (clutch) foot to operate the left brake separately. An advantage I think to the Fergies that no one mentioned is the hood raises easily and thus they are easier to work on, and especially compared to the front distributor Fords.

If you find yourself in a situation where you need 2 left feet to brake and clutch at the same time use your left hand and pull up on the left wheel brake petal. Petal will apply pressure both up and down . Up seems to have a mechanical leverage advantage cause you don't need to pull hard at all to lock the wheel. This works on TO 20 this way.

the biggest advantage i see of fergy over ford is something i never see addrest here . it is the low rpm torque characteristics of the continetial engine which is very helpful in reducing wheelspin in tight low groundspeed operations.the power is still there at low rpm

Hi Tim

My personal point of view is:

Ford are most popular for collectors and amateurs
because there is more N's than any other tractors
of this era. By this fact parts are cheaper and
easyly availble than parts for the other brands.
The Fords were manufactured many years before the
first Ferguson...more people have nostalgy and
recall their young years with these tractors.

Now technical appreciation..
Flat head engines are vulnerables compared to overhead valves type engines. For same number of
hours of use with same maintenance a Ford flat head engine has to be rebuilt 2 to 3 times compared to Ferguson engines. Ferguson engines are
stronger with few more HP. The Fords with the taper rear wheel hubs loosen with time the Ferguson does'nt have this type of hub.

Yes I am Ferguson owner two TEA-20 and one MF-135
But...as collectible I would like to have a Ford N
But...as strong working tractor I prefer Fergusons

For operating..both tractors are similar just
little more power on Fergusons and "take care of your thumbs" on both models.

Just my modest opinion

Follow-up....

Ford
Egines may need more care and repairs
Taper rear hubs may loosen
Access to the front mount distributors on early models is more difficult.

For the rest...electrical..leaks..drive train..
wheels...steering...etc... Both are built from
similar technology there is no more weakness than the Fergusons.

The motor is the main difference; the TO20 has a Continental engine with overhead valves. Some parts do cross over alright; I think the hydraulic pumps might be the same or at least have some of the same parts, for example.
Rear wheel leaks don't pay much attention to the label on the front of the hood as far as I know...
