Set the engine at Top Dead Centre for No.1 Cylinder (front of tractor)on the compression stroke. There should be a pin hole in the engine/gearbox flange in which you can lock the engine in position with a suitable rod (dont forget to remove it when you have done)Some engines like to be timed to spark from top dead centre others from 10 degs before. but on the Standard engine this pin hole marks the correct position. Use a screw driver in the sparkplug hole to ensure the correct position of piston. Check the sparkplug leads go to the correct plugs in accordance with the firing order. Next disconnect the small wire going into the side of the distributer and run a lead with a bulb to the non earth battery terminal. With the distributor clamp slackened off, rotate the distributor until you reach the point where the bulb just goes out or comes on, this is the firing point and the engine will be correctly timed. Check the manual for the precise timing position.
