My TO-20 died last week, every thing turns in the tranny, in netural, or in gear. The engine runs with the clutch dis-engaged. Let out clutch, engine stalls. Tractor has A HUPP transmission in it. In put shaft into HUPP seems to be locked up. There is a pipe plug on top of the HUPP tranny, Seems like there would be a better way to add oil to the HUPP than taking off the steering box??? Anyone out here have any experience with the HUPP transmission? Any good place to get parts or a different tranny?

I am pretty sure the Hupp operates under the same principal as a Sherman. The input shaft carrieer bearing and the front tranny seal is replaced with the tranny unit. There is no seal between the two trannsmissions. The forward seal on your Hupp keeps the fluid in the tranny where it belongs. The pipe plug is only to fill it with fluid before you run it, right after installation. From then on it just "migrates" from one side to the other.

IT must work pretty good, because after I changed out my fluid a couple of times (when I bought the tractor it was seriously nasty), I had to split the tractor. I took my Sherman apart, and the fluid was clean as could be.

Good Luck
Steve

Steve W. Thanks for the post. Oil flowing thru the bearing makes sense. Still have to split the tractor and pull the HUPP, and see what is wrong with the darn thing. Found a used unit, but they want $550. Thanks again for the info. Dick

If you find that it is a bearing problem, go to a local bearing supply place...they will have what you are looking for....if it's gears I think you are in trouble. I am not sure if Fergusons work this way, but on my 2N ford, if you have any wear on the bottom of the shift lever, it can get into two gears at once. Taking off the shift cover would be a good idea before you split the tractor....

Take Care
Steve

Steve; I have the tranny cover and the steering box off of the tractor. You can shift the transmission into different gears with just your fingers on the shifter forks. You can roll the tractor back and forth while in gear or out of gear. There is no response to different positions of the HUPP tranny lever. Every thing from the out put shaft of the HUPP thru the tractor transmission seems free and clear. No way in he** can I turn the in-put shaft of the HUPP, what ever went south, I beleive is in the front half of the HUPP. I am in the process of making stands to split the tractor. Might be making too big of a job out of this, but playing with the old fergie sure as he** beats being addicted to the boob tube. Thanks again Steve

Steve
I currently have the same problem with my Hupp transmission. I removed it from the tran housing, opened it up and found two gears broken. I found your posted info looking for parts. What did you find wrong and did you locate parts or a replacement transmission? William
