I recently bought a 1953 ferguson,I am having a problem lifting my brush hog, and when it does lift it drops immediatly. I am the city boy new to the country setting and know nothing about tractors, please help

One can exchange the pressure relief valve without removing the pump, but you must study the manuals and make a wrench short enough to work in the space. If you do take out the pump it must be unhooked from the control fork first or damage will occur. Again get a good manual and study it closely.

Drizler had some good advice. Get the manual. Look in the side cover while it's running as he said. I'm betting it may be the relief valve which he mentioned, which is behind the pump and on the bottom and looks kinda like a spark plug. It is possible to change it thru the side cover openings, and easier if you drain the fluid, though not essential. Normally you do not have to remove the lift cover to replace the relief valve. Lift cover removal is a little bit delicate, so again, read the manual. The relief valve is available from the MF dealers for about $25. The reservoir holds 6 gallons and the manual calls for 90 wt. mineral oil or GL-1 as it is often sold these days, probably about $20-25 per 5 gal. bucket. There are 3 drain holes, only one fill hole. Hope that helps.

Pull the side cover off tranny, the one with the circle of 11/16 bolts its about 5" dia. Turn on machine and see if you can see foaming or turbulance is the word they use, around the sides of the pump which is the large square thing mounted in bottom. Or is there oil spraying or leaking down the sides of the casing indicating the end of the hydraulic tube is loose ect. If its none of those it is likely the piston which raises the unit and is located under your seat. With my experience having a TO 20 for some time its often the little RELIEF VALVE in the center of the pump itself thats leaky or gooed up. Its easy to remove and check but you should have a manual. Before you do anything check the oil and change it if its milky and make sure its good old 80 90W Gear oil ( stinky stuff) in there, someone may have put hydraulic oil or motor oil in. That ought to give you a good starting point, the pump and lift are really easy to remove. It drops right out of the bottom of the tractor being secured to the top of that large bolt circle plate on the tranny bottom.

I probably should have clarified but it was too hot to think. Just about everything in the hydraulics on the 20 / 30 is either identical or only slightly different usually being a tad beefier. Otherwise the manual covers both together as one subject.
