it appears the previous owner of my to30 felt the need to put some aluminum foil between the gas tank and the valve cover....i'm not sure why...there is approximetly 2" of air space between the two.seems to me the only purpose that foil served was to keep the heat within the valve cover and that can't be a good thing..a note to you newbies like myself...when changing the oil filter in your cannister, take the time to take the hole cannister assembly of the engine block..you would'nt believe the sludge that builds up in that cannister..off course if you change your oil regularly i suppose that would'nt be a problem..... ..... .any ideas why the previous owner would have used that foil?.....i guess i'll add a couple of fender washers when i mount the gas tank, could'nt hurt anything.

My guess is that any engine looks prettier with a chrome looking valve cover
Two reasons come to mind about the aluminum foil: 1. vapor locking of the fuel in the fuel line. (never heard of it in a Ferguson) 2. Fuel boiling in the tank putting great fear into operator. (fantastic explosion about to happen) I would say that the valve cover rids the engine of a lot of heat with the fan blowing air across it continually, but if you remove the valve cover and it is full of old crud on the inside, it can't rid itself of much heat in that condition. I tend to think that if an engine is running too hot that it may have an internal problem like the thermostat sticking or the radiator somewhat clogged. Try blowing out the radiator from behind (engine side) I have seen what looked like impossible, the amount of crud in one. Cleaning it out several times during a summer of mowing will surely make it run cooler, maybe eliminate the fuel boiling if thats the case. If they don't have a working temperature gage, you can't assume that they are running cool enough just because they run. You must make sure by keeping the radiator clean and using a good quality oil up to the mark on the dipstick. Fred

It's a little known fact that the aluminum foil will prevent aliens from sending radio waves to the tractor which causes them (the tractors)to do the aliens' bidding. All part of a very complex scheme to take over the earth.

My guess is the foil is to keep the heat away from the gas tank. Some people complain of boiling gas under certain conditions. I myself have never seen it in over 30 years with my TO 20 but I have to believe it is possible. Do a search for boiling gas at the top of page. Has been talked about before.

My experience is that it's cheaper to plug the vent hole in the gas cap than buy a fuel pump. Then you can have a fuel delivery system under pressure without the (cheap) expense of buying an electric pump.
