IAM IN THE PROSS OF CONVERTING MY 1950 TO 20 TO 12 VOLTS BECAUSE WHEN I GOT THE TRACTOR THE GEN. AND BRACKET WAS MISSING. WITH HELP FROM THIS GROUP I WAS ABLE TO MAKE THE BRACKETS I NEEDED TO MOUNT MY ALTINATOR. THE ALTINATOR I USED HAS A SMALL WIRE ON IT FOR THE INTERNAL REG WHICH I HAVE HOOKED UP TO A SWITCH WITH THE INDICATOR LIGHT IN LINE. I CHANGED MY COIL TO A 12 VOLT TO WORK WITH THE PIONTS DISTRIBUTOR AND GOING TO CHANGE THE STARTER SELINIOD TO 12 VOLT TOO. MY QUESTION IS THAT THE OLD 6 VOLT SYSTEM WAS POS GROUND DO I HAVE TO KEEP IT POS GROUND 12 VOLT TO GO WITH THE STARTER MOTOR AND HOOK UP THE ALTINATOR TO THE NEG SIDE OF THE BATTERY NOW OR IF I MAKE IT 12 VOLT NEG GROUND WILL IT SPIN THE STARTER BACKWARDS. IF ANY ONE CAN GIVE ME WIREING INSTRUCTIONS IT WOULD BE GREAT I CANT WAIT TO GET THE TRACTOR RUNNING. THANKS

Sounds like you are on the right track and as someone else said...the 6 volt starter will be just fine running on 12 volts...and the 12 volt coil is the best way to go....but don't forget about the condenser beside the points in the distributor...it's 6 volts and won't last on 12 volts...change it to any 12 volt that looks similar and will bolt in place....may be available right here on this site...if you look over on the left some. Hook it up NEGATIVE Gr. Switch your ammeter wires around . It should show discharge with the lights on and engine off. Switch your coil wires so - side of coil goes to dist. Your solenoid will be fine as is and your starter will not run backwards with negative ground. If you have a wire in and out of your indicator light and it does not charge upon startup momentatily jump accross the bulb to excite the alt. If it now works you need a little bigger bulb in the indicator light. Good luck.
