Working on a 1950 TO-20 for the first time, read all about cracked block problem in z120 engines in this forum, sure enough, after removing head for reworking, noticed hair line cracks at the top of the block between all cylinders--no water in the oil. I need some help, is the engine still OK or is this one ready for the parts heap, thanks, Dave.

Dave: Ours had a hairline on top, so we assumed that one exists on bottom end; did a valve job, surfaced head, put back together with new gaskets, + 2 cans of Bahrs stop-leak. So far, good as new! Runs great, no water in oil! We only use it for show now, as it has been retired from the fields!

Have seen blocks repaired by drilling block between cyls and using allthread to clamp the block together and inserting new liners and then using expoxy gas tank sealer so it wont leak. Kind of a one time fix but works good and is better than tossing block away. Good luck, Ken

Cracks in the block on top are sealed by the head gasket. I have seen these run for years. cracks between 1-2 and 3-4 where the o-ring seals with the bottom of the sleeve is not repairable without welding, and then I've never heard of one lasting very long. Scrap it and put in a 289 Ford. Sometime when I have more time I'll post a note on how I did mine. Good luck.

Please do when time permits post some details how to fit the early Ford 221,260,289 to the Fergie. Coyuple of things i can think of , do you use the ford block as a stressed member or build a frameand also doesn't the carb. hit the gas tank.
Saw pictures once of a 2.8 S10 Chev pickup engine in a fergie. Thanks!
