I just bought my first tractor. I don't know anything about this tractor or any tractor for that matter. The previous owner couldn't tell me anything about it. How do I determine what year model and size it is. The plate on the engine is to wore to read there is one near the steering wheel but it just has patent numbers. It looks as though it has a whole in front for a crank handle but i'm not sure.

William:

Enjoy your tractor, but be careful using it, sorry to sound like your mother. LOTS of folks have been seriously hurt or worse, operating them. And by ALL means if you plan to use a rotary mower (brush hog) get and use an ORC (over running clutch/coupler) it could quite literally save your life!

Regards

Terry O

The tag under the steering wheel has the markings ser to 20 or 30 and numbers behind it. This is located at the very top of the tag. Email me the numbers I have books that will tell the year.

William, On that plate next to the steering wheel there should be more than paten #'s. How about serial #'s ? I have 8 #'s on mine. Then you can cross ref. to the site located on the side of this pg. Good Luck! Steve

Congratulations on your purchase! The best thing you can do right now is to purchase the owners manual, and if you are mechanically inclined, the shop manual. You may obtain copies of the original manuals from a MF dealer or: Faxon Auto Literature, 3901 Carter Ave., #2, Riverside, CA 92501-1042-phone # 1-800-458-2734. These are great little tractors, and seemingly run forever with proper maintainence and reasonable usage. A safety advisory! Listen to your instincts and don't operate your tractor when/where you are unsure of the consequences of your actions.

Congrats on the purchase. With respect to the plate numbers try a tracing. Very thin paper and the side of pencil often reveals what used to be obscured. There is an unofficial Harry Ferguson site with serial numbers correlating to years, from there your off and running. By the way... watch the colons and semi-colons at that site it's easy to slip a year.
