I cant tell you a whole lot, but I remember when these tractors were new because my family had an IH dealership at the time. I was only about 12 at the time. The 5088 has an 18 speed trans. 6 gears
and 3 ranges. I believe your 3488 has 8 speeds and
2 ranges. The shifts from 1-2,3-4,5-6 are power shift (basiclly the same as the T/A on older tractors) The 50 series had a much heavier rearend
and transmission than the 30 series. A friend of mine traded a 1466 on a 5088 a few years ago and he really likes it.

The 3488 was a hydro...not a gear drive tractor. The 3688 was the gear drive version. The 30 series (3088, 3288, and 3688) had basically the same transmission as the former 66 and 86 series tractors. The only difference is that the TA lever was eliminated and instead the TA was electrically actuated by moving the gear shift lever from side to side. The 50 series (5088, 5288, and 5488) were an all new transmission with 18 speeds. There were three ranges with six gears in each range. You were able to powershift from 1 to 2, 3 to 4, and 5 to 6.

The best thing you could do BILLY BOY is run that old binder down over a hill somewhere and your troubles will be over. As far as the other old binder do your self a favour and look at good tracter like a JOHN DEERE.

we have a 5088 and i love it. The only thing, drive it until it get's good and warm and see if it has a growl in the hydraulic system,(IT ONLY DOES IT WHEN IT'S GOOD AND WARM)!!! this noise will drive you crazy. this problem is fixable.

JUNK DEERE JIM,
Hopefully when he runs it over the hill, it will run over a couple of those worthless JD tractors that didn't have power enough to get up the hill. (that wouldn't take much of a hill)
Besides, if you are such a JD fan, why are you looking at the IH Farmall discussion group?? Maybe you are about to wake (or grow) up!!!!! !!
