Our FFA is restoring a 1949 H The shifter lever seems to have a lot of play in the bottom of the shaft where the spring is and it goes into the top cover . Is there any way to tighten this up or is that the nature of the beast .Our M is not that way. JT

All good ideas.

Also, some but not all, of the shifter swivel housing shields (the domed cover that keep water out of the transmission) came with a bushing. If that bushing is worn the leaver will wobble. Unfortunately IH dosen't support that part any longer, and I havent had any luck at the bearing houses either.

You can still get the bushing and pin from the dealer if needs be (I bought both last week). They aren't cheap I think the bigger of the two set me back nearly $20.

Thats not so bad. I got a few bushing to rebuild the belly pump on my super h and one the the bushings was $116. The guy at the counter that that wasn't right and when he double checked that was the price. Probably doesnt help that it is lined with copper.

There is a bushing & pin that goes through the shifter. They were still available a couple of years ago, from the dealer. The plugs that cover the ends of the shifter pin were also available.
Made my 41 H shift like a new one. ken

The tip of the shifter that goes into the shifting rails needs to be built up. It is probably worn after 50+ years.

Here is a pic from Nebraska Cowman
