figuring out which plow to use when i get my H done someday.

when my dad bought his H in the 60s (sold it 30 yrs ago), it came with a case 2 bottom trip lift on steel. he never used it, i havent looked at it closely, so it may be really nice.
I found a 2 bottom JD hydraulic lift in the weeds on the farm last summer missing the draw bar. didnt look too bad, but didnt look that close as i was doing something else. asked my dad about it and he said he just bought that at auction 40 years ago for the drawbar to use on another plow.

lots of goodies hiding in my own back yard lol.

in our country North Dakota, if a H will pull 2-16, then the M, will pull 3-16 same speed. same depth,, we still have get together plow days. i pull, a 3-16 with my super MTA {no. 311 semi mount] i plow in 2nd gear tourque ahead, i do have the engine speeded up, but i can plow deeper, and, have to slow down for most guys!!

The 7th Cav I believe is stationed in Korea. At leat it was in the 80's when I was there. Sgt's exam was at least 50% on Custer. Really! Mike

Karl 2- 14"s is the normal size of plow for a H. If you have extremly easy plowing soil you might get by using 2- 16's but I would stay with 2- 14's

My GG-Grandfather commanded the 7th Cavalry after Custer, sounds like he left a few loose ends out west.

In SD we used to pull 2-16's behind an H in clover and old Alfalfa ground. In 2nd or 3rd gear it did quite well as deep as we needed. If you wanted to plow excessively deep in hard pan, then you would need an M for the same plow, but could probably go faster.

In normal soils the 2- 14 is enough plow for an H

Gordon: Have you ever been outside the state of South Dakota. There are reasons to use a moldboard plow. I'm not suggesting it should be used as much as it once was. You come east to some of the areas that get 36" to 60" of annual rainfall, do a few years farming, you'll do a bit of moldboard plowing.

Right now, your acting like our favourite Nebraskan, "if it didn't happen in Nebraska, it just don't happen". You folks out on that great plain, need to get out and see the world.

Hugh. Intimating that I am parochial, and opinionated is tolerable. However, it is a dastardly deed to liken me to Allen! What do you think Allen, Dawn on the prairie? Will you act as second?

Yes,

Manure wagons at 50 paces.

Just to stay in the sprit of the thing, I'll show up with my garden tractor so that everyone can have a chance to "sling". :>)
