Mornin',

1980 686 with a 310. What was originally in this hole on the right side dash? An air filter indicator if the tractor had an American engine? Sorry for the bad picture. 'Tis kinda black out there this morning, so I just 'guessed' and pointed. Thanks, Allan

Allan, the air filter restriction guage was optional no matter which engine the tractor had. I've even seen gassers with it.

Dang Allen, what time of day do you get up to work on your tractor and take photos if it's still dark outside?

My 686 with the 312 has a snap in plug in that hole. It came from the factory with that plug in there. Never saw a 686 with factory air filter gauge. Scott.

Allen with out walking out there to see, I think my 756 has an air filter meter there. "Heck" I went anyway, air filter meter. My 706 also 310 has nothing, not even the hole.

glow plug meter on the older tractors. I have the same hole on my 86 Hydro but it has never been knocked out.

Mornin Allan. Is thatn where the cigarette lighter goes. Seems like my 806 has one there but it os alot older. Could be a spot for an either assist button too.

Hi Todd,

No, all that stuff is over on the left side. Either button is on the turn signal switch mounted in the middle.

Someone has put this goofy horn button on the tractor, then run the wire down into the inside. Trouble is, it doesn't have a horn up front. Go figure.

The one thing that is glaringly absent is an air filter indicator, but I don't think the German versions had the indicator.

There is a fella out in Idaho who tells me his 686 is the same darned way. I'm wondering if I'm just missing a "plug" to cover this hole.

Dunno,

Allan

If the hole is for the glow plug meter is that why the one in this picture is missing? Or would one have ether assist and glow plugs? Wouldn't that be a no-no?

Hi Bill,

This tractor is a 310, so it has the direct injection with either assist. But a lot of these things came with the American 282D (glow plugs) and also the 312Ds

The either and glow plugs just don't do well together as there seems to be a lot of head bolt stretching going on in this instance.

I have an old owner's manual for a 656, which I copied that illustration from, but on my old 656, the glow plug meter was down on the left side mounted in that white bracket and the air filter indicator was on the right where my hole is.

Darned if I really know; I'm just gonna try to find myself a plug at a body shop and forget 'er. :>)

Probably the glow plug. My 460U gas has one also, with no cap.

CN,

Hmmmm, dunno.

All the glow plug meters I've ever seen are on the lower outside portion of the left lower cowl mounted in a white "standoff" bracket.

Not important, I know. Just got a letter from this fella out in Idaho wanting to know what went in that darned hole 'cause his was the same way. He just got me to thinking about it, is all.

I think Howard has it right; it needs a darned plug put back in there. :>)

Well if you find out, post back. I'm currently "restoring" my 460U, and am going to have a hole left over.
