WHAT DO I REALLY HAVE

Last week I posted a message asking the value of a '39 Model A. Got some great responses and was able to get the tractor for a song and a dance. However, I found the S/N data plate and it has the following digits: B F.A.B. 12984. I think the owner was wrong about it being a 39 A, but I don't know anything about Farmall's, so once again, I need your help. The tractor doesn't have hydraulics, it does have a wide front end and is narrow in the rear like most pictures of A's that I have seen.

KW: Sounds like you've got an oddball; 'Course any red tractor is better than none! Is the tractor "offset"? In other words, does the engine set off to the left of the seat, or is everything in a straight line? If it's offset, it's an "A". If not, it's probably a "B". There were no "B"'s made with a wide front end, though I've seen a couple that were retrofitted. A picture would be very helpful as well.

The serial number for the A is FAA, for the B, FAB. The SN makes it a 1940. I don't know what the first B is for. It is possible to put a WFE on a B, it is also possible to make a B rear end into an A. You could also have half of each tractor. Your seat along with the serial plate could have been changed. After all that, I don't know, without seeing it. See if the letters in the casting numbers are the same--in the format of month*day*year where 1939 is I, 1940, J. Don't know if there is one on every casting or not.

Look at the front of the engine towards the bottom, on the same side as the oil filter. You will see a date code for the engine. My '41 "A" has an engine date code of 12 11 J, indicating Dec 11, 1940. Makes sense for a '41 to have a late '40 engine casting. H=1938, I='39, J='40, K='41, L='42, M='43, N='44, O='45, P='46, Q='47

The S/N plate has been painted over, making it very hard to read, but the digits I've listed were very visiable. The first B is a single digit to the far left of the plate and the F.A.B. 12984 is in a continuous string more to the upper right of the plate. There are, I think, 3 additional digits in the lower left of the plate, but I couldn't make them out. Is it unusual for a "B" to have a wide front end?

The serial # shows to be a 1945 A if that is what it is.

Not enough digits, 1945 serials began with 113218.
