My brother in law is looking to put a 1466 4 speed transmission in a 1566. He loves his 1566, but doesn't like the 3 speed. Is this possible and if so, can it handle the power of a 1566? Is the 4 speed going to make the tranny the weakness in the power train?
Thanks.

We have a guy near us that has made the swap, but I am not sure how. I know it can be done.

Hickory: Your going to change a lot more than just transmission. All the 4 speed tractors had bull gears and the 3 speed are all planetaries. You may as well trade tractors. As KB said everything from clutch back is different, even the castings.

I use to think the same thing until I looked at an IT manual. All of the planetary stuff is external to the main rear housing. I thought the main housing looked the same as the 14 so I looked it up on the parts CD and the part numbers of the main rear housing are the same between the 14 and the 15. The clutch housing is also the same part number. Still not sure if it would work though and even if it did I'm not sure what types of speeds you would end up with.

Did you have the plantary housing off? I was referring to main housing minus the plantary housing is the same as the one on the 1466. Below is a picture with the plantary housing removed. The main housing looks just like the one on the 1466 (the gears are different of course). So I looked it up in the parts manual and both have a part number of 68517C92. The 1586 also shares the center of the main housing with the 1486, part number 127910C91 (replaces 68517C92). I did see though that the gear from the speed transmission is different between the 14 and 15 (different number of teeth), so I wouldn't think it would work. The bolt holes in the housings should line up though.

Sounds like a lot of work to me. I'm no expert on 15's, but I'm sure the only way to do what you are proposing is to buy an entire 1466 rear end from the clutch housing back and bolt it up to the 15 engine/front end. By the time you do that, it will have been cheaper just to leave the 15 like it is, buy a good 14, and just turn up the pump a little. If you really want to re-gear the 15, check into parts from a late 1586. I think they changed the gear spacings on those a little bit to make the tractor more "usable".
