Can anyone provide a current part number or better yet a generic discription for the "pitman plunger spring" (part number - M 1 574)? It is the little spring that fits inside the hollowed out section of the pitman stick of a 27 V and goes elsewhere when the stick shatters. Any help would be appreciated as to good substitutes etc. Last time I called Case IH for 27 V parts they couldn't help. Thanks again Dick Davis

I just recently bought a 27V mower for $35 and it appears to be a good one. One thing I haven't figured out yet is how to keep the sickle from falling down when I have the sickle upright. The pitman has the point on it but slips by the bracket mounted on the cutter bar somehow.

Dick: That spring was probably the same on every 7' tractor mower ever produced by IH. Time to tell that IH parts man to get his lazy butt in gear. Tell him that when governments around the world stop subsidizing corperate farms he may be damn glad to find you parts for a 27V.

The independance of some of these guys today, clearly an indication that over the years we as a society have been much to willing to part with our money, for new toys. I am not against new technology, just the public money it takes too make it feasable.

Years ago we had a policy in my native province of Nova Scotia. Government would pay 75% of the hourly rate of buldozers over 100 hp, for clearing land out of the forest for agriculture. Many many acres were cleared that should have been left in spruce trees. I always argued this money should have applied to land in class 1,2 or 3 for agri. and should have been so much per acre, suposing you cleared the land with an OX. The policy was clearly designed to prop up a struggling Cat. dealer, nothing else.

Dick,

It looks to me like the spring in the pitman stick of a JD #5 mower is either the same or very close to it. The spring in my JD #5 is 5 1/4" long by about 11/16" in diameter. If you can't find one, come on over to Nebraska City and I will give you an extra one that I have and a cup of coffee too!

Dick, If this is a pic of what yours looks like, the spring is 5" long and 5/8" O.D.and is pretty stiff to compress. HTH.//FB

Thanks Bob and Bob, Each provided valuable information. I do have a JD dealer near by so I'll try him first and if no luck Bob in SE Neb I might just drive down and take you up on your offer of coffee. Where do you live? I am in Neb City from time to time and might just give you a call and stop by to shoot the bull some time. Thanks again guys, Dick

Thanks all. My New Holland dealer had a red version of the spring - had to shorten it about 1/3 of an inch but the 27 V is up and running. Younger parts guy at the dealer so had to explain what a pitman was! But he worked hard to find out what I wanted and GET THIS it only costs $2.32. Appreciate the help Dick Davis

for Bob in SE NE: I written your numbers down and will call/visit one of these days.
