When I built my 1937 F-20 and my 1939 M 3 years ago from the ground up,I got in touch with Quaker State company and Pennzoil company, and told them what I had. These tractor's are used mainly for show, parading and hay rides, my question was with a brand new motor, how would synthetic oil work? Both companies told me if the tractor is not run allot condensation would build up in the pan from setting and water will not mix with synthetic oil causing damage to the motor. What do you people think about this? Both my F-20 and my 1939 M have new motors and are kept in heated buildings. I start them at least once a month in the winter and are left running untill they reach operating temperatures. The reason I am interested in synthectic oil is I think it gives you better lubrication on your cylinder walls during start up. What are your ideas on this.I am using Pennzoil 10w30 now. Thanks for your input on this...Binder-Man

I attended a seminar where where a Mobil engineer said he did not recomend synthetic for anything that was not going to be run at least once a month. for the same reason it makes engines more efficient (less cling) it could cause cylinder scoring.

First break in the motor on regular oil, after that put some Amsoil synthetic oil in, simply put it is the best! I wouldn't worry about condensation as that will happen with any oil.

You will be just fine with the Pennzoil 10w30 in it.

I wouldn't use Pennzoil even in my lawn mower. Of course my opinion derives from the stuff they made in the late 60's that appeared to be made from soap, because it foamed so bad.

Case/IH offers 10 year/10,000 hour warranty on their new tractors if you use their #1 motor oil, and Fleetline oil filters. That says alot right there. I've started to use it in all my rigs, including the wifes pickup, and my newer MF tractor.

Your gonna get as many different opinions on this as there are tractors. :) My .02 is synthetics are superior to dino oil for a whole lot of reasons. BTW that water condensation issue given by the oil companies is also used when talking about dino oils. Most wrenches will advise to change dino oil when putting machines up for extended periods to avoid the water condensation/acids in used oil from causing problems in the engine. Some new car manufacturers are using synthetics straight from the factory. I still like to get at least a 1000 miles on my cars and bikes with dino oil before switching to synthetic to allow rings and parts in new engine to 'seat'. Others will disagree..but I still think the synthetics are better. I use amsoil.

I have also heard this argument B4. Haveing an engineering degree in hydraulics and now I am a manuf. eng. My educated opinion is simple dont use synthetic in a new or rebuilt engine until 30,000 or so are on the engine, talking about a car or truck then switch over to synthetic but also use the engine flush b4 putting the synthetic in the engine. Personally Who cares if your 65 year old tractor does not get peak performance, are you really concerned about gas milage, and as for the cold weather startups the damage in a cold start up is there but I would think that if the tractor has lasted 65 years who cares.

engine flush b4 putting the synthetic in the engine

DO NOT USE ENGINE FLUSH AT ALL I REPAET MYSELF YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE. DO A SEARCH ON MOTOR OIL AND LOTS OF OIL MANUFACTURES TELL YOU DO NOT USE ENGINE FLUSH IN A ENGINE BECAUSE IT WILL KNOCK THE SLUDGE LOOSE AND CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AND TELL ME THIS IF SYNTHETIC OIL WILL HURT AN ENGINE THAT IS NOT BROKE IN THEN TELL ME WHY IT IS FACTORY FILL IN LOTS OF VEHICLES INCLUDING THE CHEVY CORVETTE AND WHAT BRAND IS IS ONLY THE BEST MOBIL1 5W30 SO KURT DONT KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT MY FRIEND.

GO TO WWW.MOBIL1.COM
CLICK ON WHY SYNTHETICS TAB AT THE TOP
THEN CLICK MYTHS ABOUT SYNTHETICS
AND READ ABOUT MYTHS PEOPLE HAVE LIKE YOUR FRIEND KURT ABOUT HIS ENGINE FLUSH.
