I have some wheel painting in my near future. I would prefer not to use the spray cans and would like to have some mixed up. Does anyone have the proper codes for this paint?

Hi Tom,

For galvanized, a brand called, Cold-Galv, drys to a 100% galvanized look and coating, as that what it was made for, spraying a weld joint, etc: A very heavy visocity paint.

This would be the look of old galvanized metal, dull, not the brite electroplated galvanized look of today's metal.

I've only used it in spray cans but I would think it would be available in bulk containers.

Tom, I do the same thing as Glen , I use the Hammerite silver paint. It looks a lot like galvanized surfaces when dry. I just painted a couple of rims this week also a gas tank.

Just a side note, I painted the inside of horse water tank 15 yrs ago as an old girl friend did not want her horse drinking from a rusty tank,go figure...:>( Tank is still rust free inside and out..

I think Tru Value stores carry it or can order it.Hal
PS: When we made up gage panels for measuring different pressures on a test vehicle we had the panels Hammertone. It was very durable. The government had their own paint shop on post. Painted everything from tanks to our gage panels.

Tom,

Just get them chromed. You would be the only kid on the block with chrome tractor rims.

And yes, I've considered doing it myself.

Tom , I have done a bunch of rims lately (6). I have been using the Case IH Argent Silver, with a hardener. It's funny, this is the same name GM used on it's wheels way back to the 57 Chevy. Through the Corvettes, and Camaros. But I have found the real secret in a great looking rim is to shoot it first with an epoxy primer. Then use a lot of body filler (Bondo) to fill in the pitting. Sand with an electric sander, the little Makita is nice, velcro discs in 100. The as many coats of primer surfacer, and sanding with 220 as you need to get them factory new. I figure a spend a minimum of 10-12 hours per rim, but I never seen any to equal them. I pay 125.oo at the salvage yard, but I specify only top grade. Very little rust, drop center for the Super H and M. OH yeah, I do the inside also. But I use body shop reject colors there. Then new tubes, new tires, all in all about 600 per rer side before I am done.

Epoxy is a good idea. You can use epoxy on the inside of the rims and leave it uncoated. Epoxy is waterproof, unlike other primers.

The wheels are painted IH-2150 Red, if this is a older tractor.

Here are 2 PPG's paint codes for silver paint. I would look at the paint chips to see which one you would prefer. These paint codes can probably be cross-referenced to Dupont, Martin Senour or
Sherwin Williams. I painted my wheels yellow. Hal

I will add that I use PPG 8568, which is a GM rally wheel color. To those using spray cans--a spray gun is a lot faster, easier, and gives better coverage. To each his own.

I agree with George, but lately I have used Hammerite Rust-cap or Rustoleum Hammerfinish silver-gray, and I am very happy with the results. The two I mentioned above cost a little more, but they have tiny glass-beads suspended in the paint and when dry it leaves a slightly "hammered"-looking finish which looks closer to the original galvanized color to me.

Tom, there is no code on the rims, they were galvinized. I usually paint mine with a brush and aluminum paint.
