Dad's Birthday | As a young man of about 8 years, I started helping Dad around the farm doing what I could. As I grew Dad gave me more important things to do, and one day he got me going on an old (36) B John Deere raking hay. Boy, was I proud to have been trusted with such a job. The old B and I became friends over the years and we spent many hours together. The B was eventually traded for a John Deere 70, and it had been fitted for a loader, as well a doing field work. It also had a putt-putt, although much more pronounced. Dad decided to rent the farm after several years in a row of crop failures, and we started a construction business. That busines blossomed and our partnership was a good one for many years. About ten years ago Dad started wintering in Arizona because of the cold weather here. He mentioned from time to time how he missed the farming, and the cattle, and that old B that had chugged away in years past. My wife and I decided to surprise him on his 75th birthday. As soon as he came back from the south country we would present him with an old John Deere A I had spotted. We worked on and off all winter cleaning and scrapeing and finally painting that old A. I'll never forget the look on his face, or the tears in his eye's when we fired her up that spring. Dad's joy at having an old putt-putt back was worth way more than the work we had done on it.
