My old Fordson Super Major 5000 diesel Tractor now does not start, won't idle and has no throttle response when I can get it to run on HIGH rpm. Finally serviced my Simms Minimec (mech governor)
pump and found cam box oil was not the best, bled all air (was none),tightened all ftgs and still the same-no go!! Posible lift (supply) pump problem??? Or NEW MINIMEC ???

Thanks

I'm not a mechanic so I need to remember several years ago. It seems like my tractor sputtered and then quit running. There was no return in the fuel tank. I replaced the lifter pump and solved the problem. Anyway the lifter pump is cheap(@$50.00) and bolts on the fuel pump. You won't be out much if the lifter pump does not solve the problem. Give it a try before you pull the fuel pump. Not to scare you but a 6 cyl. Minimec pump cost $1400.00(US) last fall. LOL

Joe, No need to spend that much $$ if you do need work to your high pressure pump. My pump (same as yours) had been "condemned" as worthless by the local injection shop. I sent it to Tom at dieselstateline.com and for slightly more than one third of the mentioned $1400 it was rebuilt and guaranteed 1 year, that was 3 years ago. He knows his stuff. Hope that helps you if you need to go that route. I sent my injectors too for cleaning and testing, he'll provide new copper rings but you should order from New Holland the rubber grommets thru the head if yours are hard. Bill S.

Thanks for the replys. Mine is only 4Cyl..My plan is to put on new lift pump, new filter of course, take off the Minimec and peek inside. And if necessary get in touch with dieselstateline.com like you suggested Bill. This tracor has been historically a very strong reliable tractor. Did I mention it was also Roadless 4WD with backhoe too!!! Joe M

SOLUTION found!!!!! It was the Simms pump after all. Age, neglect, etc. all added up to a stuck control rod in the the pump. Not that bad of a process. I only had to remove the end cap, a side plate, and some small misc exterior parts. (after removing unit from tractor of course) No internals. Lots of cleaning and lube later, WOW what a difference!! Starts IMMEDIATELY. Runs strong Thank to you for helping.
