My 57 FMD doesn't have power steering and as I am in the process of equipping it with a loader I need to add it. Can anyone tell me what's involved and how to do it on the CHEAP?! What parts will I need and can some of it be scrounged off of other brands of tractors/equipment(Fordsons are pretty scarce in my neck of the woods). Thanks.

jeff,
I have a Johnson Workhorse loader on my 55 major, and I feel power steering is a must! We added power steering from a Super Major by welding a bracket on the loader frame for the power steering pump and resevoir. They are driven by a belt off of the crank. This is a hydraulic assist set-up, as opposed to a full power steering application, but it definitely helps. A long dual-action cylinder is attached at the drag link on the left side of the tractor to provide the assist. If you could find an old Ford 5000 (New Performance Super Major), it would have the same set-up. Probably your best bet would be to find pictures of the power steering on a Power Major or a Super Major and look for suitable substitutes.
Hope this helps.

I added power asist to my 56 FMD I used a valve ass'y from 70's ford truck and used a GM power steering pump mounted in place of original generator (did not work any way). valve is mounted at steering knuckle hydraulic cylinder is mounted between front axel and drag link.
