The steering columng on the Fordson Dexta is in two pieces, using a worm gear to connect the two. Can anyone tell me why and how it works? Also, how much "play" should there be (or maybe a better question, how much is too much)
Thanks

The worm gear pushes and pulls the steering gears in the needed direction.

IOW the steering levers have a groove that the worm gear slides back and forth in.

You adjust it by taking the side plate cover off the steering box and removing shims til there is 0, (as in No excess) clearance between the worm balls and the steering shaft slots.

When you take off the side cover be careful with the shims. The metal shims are thin and will seem like gaskets.
