Dynamo

Hi again!

Well, after the situation with the hydraulics, I thought I should tackle another job on the ASP to try and cheer myself up. The fact is now that the days are getting markedly shorter, and sooner rather than later I'm going to have to think about things like lights for the tractor. Where better to start than the dynamo?

I measured the dynamo output. 1.49 Volts. Hmm.
Then I took it apart, cleaned everything up, and put it back together. Stuck the voltmeter on it and... wow! 1.51 Volts! Almost enough to power an alarm clock. Nearly.

Any suggestions?!!

Cheers,

J-P

J-P,
Both wires off Dynamo.
Link the terminals together.
Volt meter from this junction to earth.
Run engine at approx 1000rpm.
If reading rises to 24 volts and holds steady, dynamo OK.

Then try the regulator.
If this is the problem, a new one is about £10 to £15. Or mail to the above number for overhaul details a' la MFI
regards
Brian

Yeeeee e-haaaaa!

Dynamo OK. Thanks Brian. Now I shall search the archives for your old post about 'hotwiring' the electrics..

BTW, the battery connects negative to chassis/earth (the terminals are different diameters slightly so this is the only way it will fit).

If I change it to positive earth will I have problems? Will the starter still go round the same way?! The dynamo output was -24V with respect to the chassis, so it looks like this wants to see the earth/chassis positive.

Thanks again

J-P

J-P,
If the battry is earthed negative and the dynamo output has been negative you will have wrecked the regulator.
Fit new regulator.
Remove wires from rear of dynamo.
Connect a small wire to the output terminal of the battery. Not the earth terminal!!!! Will not matter if this terminal is positive or negative.
Hold the other end of the wire to the FIELD terminal on the dynamo for about 10 secs.
Hey Presto Your dynamo will now work and charge the battery to the correct polarity of the battery.
All the electrics will work OK. There is a possibility that the lights will now shine dark instead of light however ;)

Brian

Thanks Brian.

The battery has indeed been fitted negative earth, but none of the rest of the electrics have been connected. Mystery wires were hanging off all over the place until I pruned them back neatly! The dynamo has been in use as a fan belt tensioner only for as long as anyone can remember - it's not connected to anything now.

The previous owner simply applied jump leads to the starter motor terminals when he wanted to start the tractor. I installed an old reject battery out of our Mitsu, and wired the starter switch to the solenoid so that I can start the machine in the proper way, but that's all I've done. The ASP starts so easily that I've only had to charge the battery twice all summer; and that's for literally dozens of starts.

Until I try it, I can't know what state the regulator is in. I'm not optomistic however, the electrics have really been messed with. At some point some "bright spark" has connected the ASP's FPM oil pressure switch to the old FMD oil pressure guage. Doh...

If I get the chance, I shall attempt some more 'restoration' over the weekend, and I'll let you know how I got on.

Cheers for now anyway, and have a good weekend

J-P
