Can I put live hydraulics on my Fordson Major?

Hello to anyone who can help.

I would like to put live hydraulics on my '56 FMD. It has got a front end loader which works off of the internal hydraulics, but live would be preferable for obvious reasons. I would also like to put a power steering cylinder on it. Here are my questions:

1) What type of pump would work? I would prefer something I could find from a wrecker. How many gpm is preferable?

2) Is it better to mount something directly to the front of the engine, or belt drive it somewhere on the front to the side?

3) Where is a good place to hide a fluid resovoir?

Tahnks in advance to whomever helps me out.

Karl,
The answer to your question about live drive is a brutal "No". You would have to replace the whole clutch, gearbox, gear selector on High/Low. If you need live drive buy another tractor with it.
PAS is different. If you could get hold of a Fordson Major PAS you will find it meets all your requirements, belt driven front mounted pump and tank all in one.

Brian,

Thanks for your reply. I guess I don't know all of the correct terminology, but I never intended to try to mount a pump internally. (The mere thought of such a thing makes me shudder with fear.) But I knew someone years ago who had mounted a pump directly on the front of the engine, and from it he ran a front end loader, and power steering. It worked great, and (as far as I know)it is still working great 20 years later, though the man in question has died, and the tractor has been sold to person(s) unknown. Anyway, I would like to try something similar on mine, but am not sure what type of pump I would need. BTW, if I decided to go with a Fordson PAS, do you know anywhere to get the parts for a reasonable price? I can't seem to find anything at the local wreckers.

Karl,
Sorry, thought you wanted to fit the whole works through the tractor.
A number of Fordson based industrial machines had a hydraulic pump mounted on the four studs on the front casting and driven by the crankshaft pulley via a fibre or rubber drive coupling. The oil tank was seperate from the tractor oil and usually mounted at the rear. Try some of the industrial breakers. Other makes have a similar setup and you could convert.
One problem you may not have thought of. The flow and pressure required to work the loader will be far higher than that required by the power steering, so it will not be just a simple "T" off the main line. You will need a flow divider to prevent pressure drops or increases and to maintain a priority circuit for the steering. Also you would need at least two pressure relief valves, one in the loader circuit, which may be in your loader control chest and one in the PAS circuit. The pump on the loader is a good idea but I would try and find a second hand PAS unit for the tractor.
Others may have done this and can offer better advice. These are just my thoughts.
regards
Brian

Brian,

Thanks for the advice. I kind of suspected that there would be some pressure issues with trying to run both power steering and loader from the same pump, but I wasn't sure. The whole tractor mechanics thing is quite new to me. It is an adventure however. However, now my wife gets somewhat fearful every time I say "Hey, I think I just thought of a way to improve the tractor".
