At a time when you can hear the "knock" ,then shut off the engine and turn the ignition key to the "run" position just before the engine stops, so that the engine resumes running again. Do this several times for consistency. Do you hear the knock when you do this??? This is to guess at the condition of the flex plate. Also, on a cold start, cycle the engine between idle an about 2000 rpm every second. That is to put some load on the crank to guess at the condition of the main bearings and in particular, the thrust bearings. Is the knock gone or quite pronounced when doing that???
