Yeah, I heard something about it when they first came out, but took it with a grain of salt. I was working for a John Deere dealer at the time, and we were working on more Chevy and GM diesel trucks than tractors. Local GM dealers didn't know how to work on them, so most of my time was spend rebuilding injection pumps and replacing head gaskets on the 5.7 diesel engines. GM finally smartened up, dropped the converted Oldsmobile gas engine, and hired Detroit Diesel to build the completely new 6.2 (and later 6.5). Great engines, but they carried the negative stigma from the first 5.7s for a long time. I think you have to keep in mind, that often a dealer gets to see a lot more "bad" trucks than the good ones. In the case of the G.M. 5.7s though, they were all bad. With the I.H. 6.9s, I know of many that had absolutely no engine problems. I suspect a lot of trouble with I.D.I. diesels in pickups can be attributed to using ether, high cylinder head temperatures (sometimes caused by replacement muffler that are too restrictive), and not using a good coolant conditioner to prevent cavatation. Also owner inexperience with diesels. I've heard horror stories about evey diesel out there (except the Cummins), and I know that they aren't ALL true.
