Mosquito kill in pond

Used to dump old oil in pond to kill mosquito population. Kind of bad for environment. Would cooking oil work the same way by eliminating oxygen or whatever? New cooking oil that is like crisco. Thanks to all for response, I gotta stop to scratch. Draining pond is not an option. Dave

Have you considered biological options? Get a couple dozen dime-store goldfish, they'll eat the larvae.

There was abig splash on local TV last summer about the Conservation authority putting goldfish in ponds to control larva from mosquitoes and it apparently works very well. They even suggest a gold fish in your rain barrel!

We have goldfish in the rain barrels and a bat house and swallow nests on the barn. No mosquitos and I get to watch the bats and swallows play.

Any surfactant will work. The larva need the surface tension to breath. Any dish soap will break the surface tension, which causes them to sink. I've never used it on an entire pond, but have on smaller stagnant pools of water without fish. Don't know the effect on fish or other aquatic life.
For uninhabited stagnant water, soap diluted with enough water to spray works great. Call your county extension office for dealing with this.

I can't imagine using oil, or that it would even be effective for this purpose.

Didn't realize how "cutting edge" we were- we had goldfish in the water troughs 50 years ago!

Took my little sister fishing in the creek when she was about 5- Apparently she liked it, because the next day, dad came in laughing- pointed toward the barn, there was Mary, intently fishing in the water trough.

ow and then in the summer I'll be coming in at dusk as the bats are coming out of the barn. I'll ask my wife if she wants to come out and watch the bats fly out with me. She hasn't taken me up on it yet.

Mosquito Dunks are very effective for small bodies of standing water, I use them in a fish pond when the fish don't keep ahead of the mosqitoes. They contain a bacteria spore that kills mosqitoes at the larve stage in about a day after application. "BTI" is the bacteria, short for "Bacilllus Thuringlensis Israelensis". You apply one tablet for every 100 to 200 square feet about every two weeks or when you start to see larve on the surface again. I have noticed when you use them heavily they also reduce the number of new fish that hatch in the pond too.

The dunks work well in small ponds but they would get expensive for larger areas.

In the Minneapolis area many cities spread bulk BTI granuals on their ponds and lakes from helicoptors in the spring to fight mosquitoes.

Ive read reports that a bug zapper will clear a yard of mosquitos in 2 weeks.I used one on the edge of my garden. It killed many of the moths of the cabbage worm. Ive watched it kill many mosquitos at night.A friend grew 2 acres of sweet corn and put a bug zapper in the middle of the plot.He said it cut down on earworm damage. The trans former gave out in my light so I got to fix it or get a new light.A photo cell shuts it of during the day.Put some fish in the pond.No way would I use oil.
