After 10 year got my baby back home, TRUCK

Well my 1963 Diamond-T has been at a place 30 miles from me for 10 years. The guy was suppose to fix it and at one time had $1000 check to pay for the fix. Well he never got around to fixing it or the good thing cashing that check. So today a friend helped me haul it home. Now I need to either find another engine or a sleeve for the engine that is in it. Sure would be nice to be able to use an antique road tractor to haul antique tractors to shows but I will probably never find the $$ and engine or parts for it. Been looking for about 10 years now for a good sleeve to fit this Cummins 220

Did some have a 262 engine? How about some photos.
Tip on that camera of yours. Hold it real still for two seconds after you press the shutter button. It is a slow auto focus camera and the shutter is released a long time after you push the button.

Stock it would have been a 190 engine but they offered a rebuild kit to make it a 220. If it had a turbo on it then it would have been a 265 Here is a old picture of it before we added 2 foot to the frame to make it a dump truck. Sure would love to get the old girl up and running again. Pull the dump bad off set the 5th wheel plate back on and haul tractors to the shows with it. It sure was a sweet ride and a eye catcher to boot. You could shine up that radiator to the point you could use it to shave with

Old ,

They are available ,how many do you want?

I will look to see if I have a good used one,

shame you don't need 250 liners have several

new ones. How many heads are off (how many

gaskets needed )?

george

Only one of the 3 heads are off. Pan is off but other then that and the sleeve and piston out which I also need a piston with rings. She isn't a good looker yet but maybe one day she will be. Sure wish one of my kids would send a sad story to the Chrome shop Mafia in Joplin MO to see if they would be nice enough to fix up an old truck for a D.A.V LOL ya like that would happen and if it did I would probably have a heart attack. Has a Fuller 10 speed road ranger in it new clutch as in less then 5000 miles same with the brakes. Oh e-mail is always open

I'll look at the shop Monday, think I have a complete engine (knocks) if George can't help you. It is the turbo version (most folks refered to them as 262's) but I believe the turbo is already missing.

Like I said would be nice just to find the 1 sleeve and piston with rings etc to fit this old girl. Would never work it hard again but maybe haul a few tractor to the shows. Would be nice to haul tractor with a old road tractor so as to get the ow and ahs for all the stuff

Now hold on youngster in my day this old man could work circles around you and then some. Just as this old truck could still do if I could find the parts for the old girl. Plus in its day it would put any Pete or KW to shame and if was not for the Gov. Diamond would still be the king of the road trucks. Back in its day the Diamond-T was the top of the top of the line truck and the KW and Pete where the wannabes

Hey old--do those fenders swing out for engine service? worked on something close years ago that did,had 6-71 detroit as i recall.Bet that old fuller has the large back box with external air shift cyl. paul

I worked at a shop that built portable natural gas plants on big skids. They assemble everything in the shop and then haul them outside. They had a huge plant to pull out of the shop so they called Premay equipment(a heavy haul specialist). They needed 2 bed trucks and I had to weld a tow hook on the front of shops 22 ton Grove 4 wheel drive crane to use as an anchor for the bed trucks. Once the skid was outside, it needed to be moved to another part of the yard so it wasn't blocking the shop doors. They brought in 3 more cranes to lift all 4 corners and put it on a trailer. To move it, they didn't use one of their fancy new trucks. They used an old Diamond T or a REO(can't remember which) from the 60's and it moved the skid by itself. That old truck was a lot more heavy duty than their modern trucks and looked in showroom condition. The guys in shop were impressed with the older truck. I think they said it had a 24 speed gearbox in it. It didn't even grunt moving the skid.

No the fenders do not swing out. It has a bat wing hood so to work on it you almost have to climb into it just to do any thing. 50% of it is aluminum. Hood radiator shutters etc but the fenders and the stuff that would/could get hit are steel . As for the tranny ya I think it has the external air shift cylindr but been years since I was under it but hope to change that and have it on the road in the next 10 or less years

You can get any sleeve made that you want as long as you have one for a pattern. But I'm sure you know this.

I used to have a 1948 1 1/2 ton Diamond T. Drove it to Alaska, lived on the back of it for 2 1/2 years then drove it home again. Had it for 17 years but sold it about 10 years ago as I just didn't have a place to keep it at the time.

I've heard you do NOT want them touching your truck. I was told when I moved here to McCook that there is a guy up between here and North Platte who had his truck done by them, and when he got it back the wiring was so hacked up that he parked it, the truck was worth less than what it would take to fix the wiring.

Hello old,
Boy does that bring back memories. Diamond T and a 220 Cummins.
Why are you having problem getting parts?
Maybe I could help, My contact are from 15 years ago, but if you give me the engine info, I can give it a shot. My e-mail is open.
I would also love to work on that thing, just like the old days. Now I got to go look for the manual, and dust it off
Guido.

Hello old,
If you get to the shifter cylinder, just take the cover off, 4 capscrews airline come off with the cover.
That is actualy the HIgh Low range cylinder.
Either the cap is full of oil, or the O'ring is bad, easy fix usually. In your case it may have some rust though.
Guido.

Well when it ran it shifted just fine. Only thing I did not like was 55MPH was top speed unless you had a big hill to go down and then you might be able to get it up faster if you pushed the clutch down and let it free wheel

HEllo old,
You can't break any spped records with that truck.
But you can make the tranny an averdrive and that will also give you better fuel mileage.
The difference in the tranny is 4h and 5th.
Swapp them and it becomes an RTO10.
Guido.

More commonly know as a Georgia overdrive.
