OT. Starting nursery business Indiana

QUestion. Has anyone out there started a nursery business in Indiana?

I actually have one started (couple hundred spruce trees). But am just getting to the point of selling them.
I know that technically you have to have a "nursery dealer" license.

How hard is it to get and get your crop inspected? If you wholesale your trees do you still need the license?

Thanks.

I'll have to check the wording on my IN wholesale license, haven't looked at it good for 10 years. Just keep paying the bill every year. I dig and sell some of my own spruces too, but probably not supposed to though. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a home for 50+ in a new neighborhood or business park. Good luck.

Most around here have went out of bussiness, hard to compete with walmart, lowes, menards. There's an auction saturday with hundreds of shrubs and trees selling near me just to get rid of them.I think you have to get pretty big and do landscaping and snow removal in the winter to survive.

Not in IN, but in Mich.

Answers to your questions.
1. Easy to get your crop inspected. All your incoming stock will be inspected by your wholesaler. Certificate included.
2. Wholesaler? You will still need to be inspected.

Get in touch with your state ag. It is easy to do, at least here in Mich.

I sell just a "few" trees each year. Getting to be more since all the big nurseries went under when the housing market went down.
