Hand held translators, sub for dave and all.

Being that Dave 2 is located where I would think the item would be most handy for foreigners (sp) like me to use, if ever traveling to a different country where language would be a problem. What I've seen on the internet will cost in the neighborhood of $400.00.Dave, are these translators (hand held-electronic translators)used very much????.Another use would be for people representing a company when needing information or a telemarketer trying to sell stuff over the phone.Telemarketers I hang up on, because their dialect is in the way and way to hard to understand. My hearing aid doesn't translate at all lol. Would you buy or rent one if you were traveling to a foreign country rather then just stumbling with the language barriers?
Just wondering. Regards, LOU.

In most parts of the world, 400 bucks will get you a car and driver who will also serve as your translator for at least a week, maybe more.

"English" is pretty much the "universal" language for tourism in Europe. Now if you are way out in the back side of nowhere there might be a problem. It is fun, of course, to know/use a few courtesy phrases...ie...Thank you, etc.

I've never seen anyone using them but don't really go anywhere that I would see it. Dialect and slang are the things that can't be translated that eat you up. Town I live in, folks talk different than the one 2 miles away. Some words will have multiple meanings depending on what other words they are used with.

Sure they may help, but I'm not quick enough to use one.

Dave
