Hey,
Im trying to decide which tractor to restore for my senior year to enter into the compition.
My choices are 1. Allis Chalmers 190 w/ spun bearing and needs cosmetic work 2. John Deere 520 ser. 157 just needs reassembled and painted and 3. IH Super MV that needs quite a bit of work. Whats your guys' opinion on it. I dont really care which make ( I like them all)

God Bless,

Cort B. Lamey

yeah sort of you restore a tractor and enter it to win its supposed to show you leadership, skills and workmanship. plus i will keep it to use and show afterward.

3 choices?the most usefull, likely the Allis, now the other choices would be based on the value of the tractor in$$ and or the sentimental value wich one is more rare?does one of them have a long history with your family?....any more info?

mo real sentamental value in any of them. Grandpa loves the 520s but i got the one his family bought new fixed and running for him.the super MV would be ok cause we also have a Super HV (but woulkd probly have the sell the m to afford to do the h as it is in disgusting condition)

If your looking to do this and try to win some awards, I would skip on the Deere- your not really going to do any "work" to that tractor. Sounds like the Allis needs some actual "work done to it, I'd pry choose that tractor. Anyone can select a Deere or IH, go take a chance on something other than that.

I would give some thaught to skills you and others working on the project have. Then try to find something that has not been done.
The Allis may be a good choice.
For a contest - I would like to see something not seen everyday.

John deeres are the most popular and get you more return on your investment. With the 190 you might loose money. The super M would be a money pit.

Thats what my dad said. Next year i believe i am taking a Diesel Mech. Class half day at the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center so i will be able to recive help if i need it and will be learning alittle more about diesel engines

There are probably 5000 of those Allis out there for every one of the Farmall MV, That is one rare tractor, not the normal Farmal but the high crop vegetible tractor. And it would get the most atention in non high crop areas of the country.

Even though I'm a true A-C nut, for me I'd have picked the JD. But that's just me, I was always looking for an easy grade!!

to bad all of them aren't done/restored, then you could show them all and be the envy of everyone. i have j-d, i-h, h-ferguson,Oliver. can"t say that i favorite one brand, lol, never a dull moment for conversation.

From all the different answers, look like you will have to draw straws to determine which one to go for. Me, of course the Super MV. I have been repairing IH tractors for 50 plus years now and never even saw one in the flesh.

I'd go with the red one if you can afford (time, money, and patience) to do a good job. If not, do the orange one.
Wouldn't make my classmates look at that green thing unless you don't like them  .

Main thing is, you have fun and learn something while doing it.

Good Luck,

Dave

i'd go with the jd for the project tractor. it needs assemble and paint. the allis is gonna need a major on the motor, and altho the super mv is the rarest and probably the most desireable of the 3, its also going to take some serious coin to get the project done, done right, and in a timely manner.

My choice would be the 520. Are you going to "restore" the tractor or just fix everything that needs fixing and make it look nice? There is quite a big difference.

Just to the Mecum Auction in Walworth WI, the Reds outsold the jd money wise it was not close in most cases, So I would do the IH first then the AC 190's are a nice tractor when done the jd is kind of and oddball tractor to operate last.

I my self live in Haubstadt about 15 min north of evansville but our farm is in winslow about an hour north of evansville and about an hour south of vincenness
