Question on old hay rake

I have nine old farm plowing tools I got from my Grandfather old farm he use years ago. A few parts missing on most all of them.

One is A hay rake, I see J D. on it. I see A sprocket gear on inside of right wheel. See it on close up photo.

Question, does anyone know what this sprocket could have posible been use for on A horse drawn rake? Just on right side.
It does not connect to anything.

There was probably a hookup to the foot pedal with a hook that grabbed the sprocket to lift the tines and dump the accumulated hay.

Yes, that had to be the answer. I did not think of that. There had to be A way to dump the hay, that is it. A few parts may be missing.

Thanks to Goose & Len .

Everytime I see one of those dump rakes I think of a time when a friend and I decided to finish off a hay field useing a dump rake and a john deere M. He is driveing the M and I'm on the rake. Windrows looked like a snake trail.

I hate to admit it but I raked quite a few acres on one like that with a team of horses. And the air conditioner didn't work worth a darn. LOL
