Near death or dismemberment

That could have ended very badly! Went to take some bales out before the storm hit. Went across the road, made a hard left turn with a round bale on the loader, looked down and had a front tire bulged WAY out. The rim had rusted and broke away at the bead. Great! Now I'm on the shoulder of the road with about a foot of tube sticking out of a tire. Didn't want to risk my life changing it right there. Had to walk past it to open the gate and was afraid of getting my legs blown off at the knees, but I made it. I limped it in throught the gate in low gear, dropped the loader and used the down pressure to lift the front end and take the pressure off,but now I see it's broken away right at the valve stem,so I had to risk loosing an arm to reach in and take the valve core out.
Lug bolts were rusted in pretty bad from years in the manure,so I had to take all 6 off with a breaker bar.
Just threw it on the shop floor to break it down and the snow started. What a GREAT day! Always on Sunday ain't it?

I'da shot it with a .22 instead of taking the risk of screwing the core out. The tire and rim were gone anyway, and you can patch a couple of holes in the tube if it's worth saving.

No,the tire was good. Not all that old, maybe 7-8 years. If it hadn't been Sunday,I sure would have stuck the tube with something and wasted that. As it stands now,I've got a nice, pretty Oliver red wheel on the front of an Oliver 1600.
Maybe I can start a fad or something.

Ya one like that will scare the heck out of you but once it has pushed out the danger is pretty much gone since it has lost what was holding it in. Now if it had done that when you where airing it up then yep you could have payed for it, BTDT and boy did it hurt when the rim let loose but I was lucky it was on a small wheel barrow tire. You did get lucky it didn't blow out and leave you running on the rim or worse laying the tractor on its side if you had the load up much off the ground

Ya,I know how bad one can blow. I was fixing a 10.00x20 manure spreader tire one time with a split rim. The ring was on the back side and I had it laying on the shop floor. I was crouched on it holding the air hose when the ring blew off the back side. Blew me right out the door. Didn't think I was EVER gonna hit the ground. My left ankle still pops when I twist it around after all these years. Unbelievable the force behind compressed air.

One day in the barn I kept hearing a ticking sound. I followed the noise all the way across the barn to a loaded hopper wagon. I had my ear next to the tire for a couple of seconds and then KABOOOOOOM!!!!! It was completely shredded, but not a single piece hit me. Couldn't hear well for a couple hours though. The truck battery exploded beside my head once also. I wonder why I have tinnitus?

Yep that is why I use a clip on type air chuck when airing up a split rim type tire. Clip it on and then stand back. Or wrap a chain around the rim/tire/ring.

I had to put our spare 11L-15 on my 1600 a few years ago when the 7.50-16 went flat raking hay. Was going through a corn feild to a gravel road coming into it, as the intersection of the highway was tore up that year. Made it to the road, saw it was 1/2 way down and turned around. Didn't even make it back across the field and it was flat.
