Will 14.9 Tire Chains Fit 15.5 Tires?

Looking for a set for my 15.5 x 38's and a guy offered me a nice set but they came off 14.9 x 38. He said they should fit. $200 and they're the plain ladder style and he said they look almost brand new...hardly any wear. Whaddya think?

Should fit your 15.5's just fine.

Word of warning however: Unless your tires are fairly well worn the cross chains on plain ladder chains will tend to drop into the valleys between the tire treads. This drastically reduces the chain's gripping abilities.

To avoid this you should mount the chains as tight as you can get to keep the cross chains from "walking" into the tread valleys as the tire rolls.

Or add chain links between adjacent pairs of cross chains to hold them on top of the treads ala "duo-grip" chains.

Thanks Bob. Tread is worn down pretty good so I think the ladder style will work. Gonna buy springs and chain to make tensioners so they stay tight. Never thought of making my own duo-grip. New set is about 350 plus shipping.

Yep, they'll fit fine. The ladder style chains I have used in the past I always had the best luck running them with a little slack in them so when the tire rotates the chain ladder "falls out" of the lugs for better grip. To tight and the chain just falls between the lugs and stays there.

I agree with leaving chains a little loose, not much, just a little. I bought Duo-Grip chains and put bungy cords on them to keep them tight. The chains ended up between the cross bars(long bar/short bar). I took the bungy cords off the chains and the chain does fall out of the tread instead of staying stuck it in it. They work 10 times better being a bit loose and also self clean. Dave
