O/T Lost another one........

Went to the funeral this morning of one of my old stock car racing buddies.

He slipped on ice and hit his head on some steps by his house. Something dumb that could happen to anyone at any age.

He went out at the top of his game, though. He won the last race he drove in--last fall at age 72.

Among other memorabilia, that same checkered flag was on display at the funeral.

I wondered what happened to him. I was at his last race and also followed his career years ago at midwest speedway.

I saw Butch around all the time, but never really followed his racing the last few years.

I used to own one of the late model modifieds that ran at Midwest, number 78. Gene Hromas drove for me most of the time. He died last July.

After the late models fell apart at Midwest, I got in on a sprint car with a cousin of mine till he moved to Hastings. After Midwest shut down, I pretty much got out of it.

I could spend an hour telling stories about Butch. One of them was he was one of the first of us to try power steering on a stock car. (I never did). One evening, a lap or two into a heat race, Butch's power steering belt jumped off. That big Bohunk manhandled the car around and actually won the race.

A lot of memories came back today.

Goose, very sorry for your loss!

I fell 18 months ago from the second step of a step ladder, hit my head on the concrete floor. Got very lucky, the bleeding stopped before I died. Got lucky again and had a great surgeon, who performed a very serious surgery and removed the clot,,,, I'm left with numbness on my right side of my face and torso... I AIN'T COMPLAINING!

I learned we are not as tough as we think we are, just the exact right hit and it is over!

Hi gene.

this is tom scheffert....you worked on my stock car chassis once. I still see duane about a dozen times a year. good to hear from you.

Small world!!

Good to hear from you, Tom. I'll email you, but maybe not tonight, anymore.

Glad you pulled through reasonably well. It always seems so senseless when someone dies from something simple like that.
