Head Stud Nuts (Cant Find)

Doing a rebuild on a four cylinder engine that has 3/8-24 studs and nuts on the head. Does anyone know of a supplier for 3/8-24 grade 5 or 8 nuts with a larger hex size then the standard 9/16? Thanks in advance. Rich

How about using standard Grade 8 nuts with hardened flat washers under them?

How about these?

From McMastercarr.com. 5/8 flange on them, 12 point hed, and stronger than grade 8 according to their info. A little spendy but for this purpose I'd go for it. When I order from them I get it the next day. Never a problem yet and easy to order online.

Thank you for the fast replies. I would like to find a larger hex head with a washer or a flange nut because the standard nuts only leave a depression in the washer up close to the studs. Just trying to make it a step better. Thanks

McMaster-Carr link also has a hex head flange nut but you are right, they are pricey! I never thought it would be so hard to find a hard 3/8-24 nut to use as a head stud nut. Thanks for the replys

What you are asking about are called heavy hex nuts. For a 3/8-24 size the hex is usually 11/16. I think the link below will take you to the right page but if not look at Mcmaster Carr's main site, click on nuts, and then on the size and thread your looking for and it'll bring up all of comparibles they carry.

Like another post suggested you would probably be better off to go with a standard nut with a hardened washer under it. Many heads are put on that way from the factory so it's not an uncommon thing to do. One reason I suggest this is with a heavy hex or a flange nut the torque required to get one of the nuts with a larger surface area required as 'tight' as a standard nut will be increased due to the larger surface area of the nut contacting the head and the extra amount of resistance having to be overcome to make up for it. It may only be a few ft-lbs of torque difference to overcome the extra resistance but it will be there to contend with.
