Do you Guys (Yall) eat anything special on new years day? Here in Charleston we natives eat Collard Greens and Hoppin John (rice cooked with cowpeas).Greens are for money and hoppin john is for good luck. I don't care that much for collards but for my families sake I intend to eat more than I did last year. I am not superstitious I just don't like to take chances

Here in Southern Mo. we have always ate crowder peas and hog jowl on New Years Day. The smoked jowl fried sure was good. Then used the gease to season the peas. Now that mom has passed, my wife won't eat the jowl, and my low fat ,no salt diet prevents me from eating it.

I live in nj, but our farm is in PA in PA Dutch country, they always say eat pork and sauerkraut on New Years and you will have good luck

Had alot of friends over last night, I put the rest of the Christmas ham in the crock-pot with onions and pinto beans. It only got half eaten last night, so I'll make some more cornbread and have a nice supper with the left-overs. Need to find a BC powder at the present, though.

Nothing special on New Years Day.

We once had a family tradition of having oyster stew on New Years Eve, but that kinda died out when one generation replaced the last.

When I was growing up, my mom's dad would come over and we all would eat lutefisk. I am the only one who eats it now, maybe once a year I will buy some and fix it for my self.

Looks like it will be whatever we can come up with here at the firehouse...hopefully, all those citizens with hangovers will sleep all day (and night)!
Be safe out there!

Ham and beans, cornbread, spinach, cottage cheese.

The old timers around here always said the beans on Jan 1 would make a prosperous year.

I think in the old days that "Prosperous" kinda meant not starving to death in the coming year.

I hope you all have a prosperous (in modern terms) 2011.

Paul

We have hog jaw, fried potatoes, and beans every New Years for lunch. Not sure why But I know my heart and arteries hate me that day.

Moved from Iowa to Florida 33 years ago. Heard about hoppin' john from a good ol' gal neighbor and have been having that every January 1st since.

Usually have 20-25 folks over and do some ribs on the smoker, too. Good time had by all.

Like Larry, we are in PA Dutch country. My MIL always has pork and sauerkraut along with options for the grand kids who don"t like the kraut. Meal is at 5 this year and I am fasting until them so I don"t feel so guilty about filling my plate multiple times. She can really cook. Unfortunately her daughter (my wife) hates cooking. If the stove is on in our house it is me doing the cooking.

Happy New Year,

Kirk

Being from a good old German heritage, I gotta have pork and homemade sauerkraut on New Years. It's for good luck and it sure has worked for me.
