1938 BR John Deere Restoration

I have a little BR that was my father's. I'm attempting a restoration of it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what type of front tires were put on these tractors from the factory. It has 16" front rims on it. I was looking at 600x16 but they look big for the tractor. I had to buy 11.2x28 for the rear. My father once told me that it had 9.00x28 on it when he bought it but I couldn't find that size anymore.

I don't know which front rims you have but the parts book lists a 5.50 X 16 or a 5.25 X 16 on the BW,BR & BO front rims. The rear wheels show a 9.00 X 28 and 10 X 28 but if these are not available you'll have to go to the nearest size like you said. I think todays 11.2 is close to the old 10. The Miller Tire site shows they have some 10 X 28's. They also have additional info about old vs new tire sizes in their FAQ section. Check out their site at http://www.millertire.com

Why not post that on the John Deere site someone there will have the manual and know what was available when new.

The replacement tire for a 9:00 was a 11 that is now a 12.4 so you are 1 size too small for that tractor. The 10:00 became the 12 that is now 13.6, the 11:25 became the 13 that is now 14.9 and the 13:50 became the 15 and I do not know what that converts to. The difference is that a 9:00 was a round tire that was the same height as it was wide, then they started going only by the width and so your new tires are about 2" to short in height.

Thanks for all your responses. Now I have avenues to research. I'm really looking forward to getting the little "BR" going again. It was the first tractor I ever started by hand. I was about 10 or 11 at the time.
